MDA-MB-175   [Cellosaurus entry CVCL_1400]

Breast Cancer Cell Line

Description

Hyperdiploid line obtained from Dr M.J. O'Hare.

Notable Features

Relatively simple karyotype for a breast line. Notable for the complex 8;11 translocation, present in 2 copies, which results in fusion of the NRG1 gene on chromosome 8 to DOC4 on chromosome 11, and so appears to be the first example of an oncogenic fusion gene in breast cancer. NRG1 encodes the heregulins, ligands for heterodimers of ERBB2 with ERBB3 or ERBB4. The fusion protein is secreted and has heregulin activity (for details see Adelaide et al, 2003; Huang et al, 2004).
